John Bagshaw, a prominent figure in the harness racing industry and former chairman of Harness Racing Australia, passed away at the age of 87 at his Sydney home. His extensive career spanned over 40 years as a breeder, owner, and official, beginning as a hobby before evolving into a successful commercial venture. He co-founded Golden Gait Stud in the 1970s and later became a key investor in Alabar Bloodstock, collaborating closely with its principal, Alan Galloway.

Bagshaw’s contributions to breeding included ownership stakes in several notable stallions, such as Village Jasper and Armbro Operative, as well as breeding successful racehorses like dual Oaks winner Mother Courage and Derby winner Mr Nickel. His influence extended beyond breeding, as he played a crucial role in the harness racing community, particularly during his tenure as chairman of Harness Racing Australia, where he led the impactful 2011 Standardbred Breeding Panel Report.
