Title: "Celebrating Tradition: The Budweiser Clydesdales at NASCAR All-Star Week in Wilkes County"

The Budweiser Clydesdales horses were at multiple locations in Wilkes County in conjunction with the North Wilkesboro Speedway’s third hosting of NASCAR All-Star Week, which culminated with the NASCAR All-Star Race on Sunday, May 18. The full Clydesdale team appeared at the race on May 18.

According to the Anheuser-Busch website, two sons of August A. Busch Sr. surprised him in St. Louis, Mo., with the gift of a six-horse Clydesdale hitch (team) to commemorate the repeal of prohibition of beer in April 1933. Realizing the marketing potential of a horse-drawn beer wagon, the company also arranged to have a second six-horse Clydesdale hitch sent to New York to mark the event. The Clydesdales drew a crowd of thousands on their way to the Empire State Building.

This hitch continued on a tour of New England and the Mid-Atlantic states before stopping in Washington, D.C., in April 1933 to reenact the delivery of one of the first cases of Budweiser to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Shortly after the hitch was first introduced, the six-horse Clydesdale team increased to eight.

On March 30, 1950, in commemoration of the opening of the Anheuser-Busch Newark Brewery, a Dalmatian dog was introduced as the Budweiser Clydesdales’ mascot. A Dalmatian now travels with each Clydesdale hitch, including in Wilkes last week.

There are multiple Budweiser Clydesdales hitches. Each consists of 10 horses, which includes two spares. Each horse in the hitch is a gelding standing at least 18 hands (6 feet) tall at the shoulder. Each has a bay coat, four white “stockings,” a blaze of white on the face, a black mane, and a black tail. They each weigh between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds.

According to the Livestock Conservancy, the Clydesdale is a draft horse breed in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The name is derived from the River Clyde. The breed’s history goes back to the mid-1700s, when native horses were mated with larger Flemish horses. Their offspring were then selected for use in agriculture and for all types of heavy hauling, including transport through the streets of Glasgow. The Clydesdale Horse Society was formed in 1877, and its breed registry records go back to the 1830s.
