Title: "Key Horses to Watch in the 151st Kentucky Derby: Insights from FanDuelTV’s Christina Blacker"

The Kentucky Derby is America’s signature race, Christina Blacker with FanDuelTV said.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The 151st Kentucky Derby is shaping up to be another exciting year and there are a few standout horses you should be paying attention to before they’re off to the races.

"The Kentucky Derby is America’s signature race," Christina Blacker with FanDuelTV said.

FanDuel is an online gambling platform and throughout the horse racing season, they’ve been offering insights to help people make decisions on possible winners.

Blacker has been a fan of horse racing since she was young. "I grew up in the game of horse racing. My dad was a jockey, so I’ve been around horses my entire life," she said.

Blacker said there are a few horses people should keep an eye on.

A favorite to win at this year’s Derby is Journalism.

Blacker said he’s won his past two races in California and is what horse racing enthusiasts call an Omni Fig horse. This means his speed figures in his 3-year-old season are faster than any other speed figures earned by any other horse on the field.

"So on paper, he really is a significant standout," Blacker said.

She said Journalism’s trainer, Michael McCarthy, was displaced by the Eaton fires. "It’s been a really hard year for them. To have a horse like this and maybe be sitting on a career and lifelong goal, amidst so many ups and downs, it’s been a rollercoaster for him," Blacker said.

She was also interested in Sovereignty, trained by Bill Mott, for this year’s Derby. He won the Fountain of Youth Stakes and came in second in the Florida Derby.

"Generally speaking, with horses, you see a lot of physical maturity at 4-years-old and at 5," Blacker said. "But what I like most about Sovereignty is in looking at him, he looks very mature."

She said he’s a big, strong horse and is very tall; he even towers over some of his competition who may just be getting into their physical peak.

"Even though he came in second in his last race, that race was a shorter distance than the Kentucky Derby," Blacker said.

She said for a horse like Sovereignty, the added distance would be significant, as he needs more room to try and run down the competition.

From a storyline perspective, Blacker said Coal Battle is an interesting competitor. She called Sovereignty Lonnie Briley’s, his trainer, horse of a lifetime. "He has trained him to perfection. It’s his first time ever running a horse in the Kentucky Derby," Blacker said.

Briley found Sovereignty at a relatively small sale in Texas. "He’s the real, kind of underdog Derby darling and it would be great to see Lonnie Briley win the Kentucky Derby in his 70s," Blacker said.

She also mentioned Chunk of Gold as an underdog story of the Kentucky Derby. His trainer, Ethan West, is younger than most others in the running.

Lastly, Blacker mentioned Sandman, who is trained by Mark Casse, is owned in part by Griffin Johnson. Johnson has a TikTok following of over 9 million. Blacker said because of Johnson’s popularity, you might see lots of bets on Sandman this year.

"We’ve talked a lot in the last couple of years about needing to kind of bring the next generation into horse racing and I think with his content and his involvement this year, that’s a huge advantage for us," Blacker said.

On some level, whatever horse you would bet on is a top-notch runner. "There isn’t a horse lining up that doesn’t deserve to be there. So if you find a connection to one of the Kentucky Derby horses, you got to go with it," Blacker said.

She says you’ve got to trust your gut but whatever you choose, you’ll still feel the rush on Derby day. "Whoever your Derby horse is, you’re still going to feel that same level of excitement when they turn for home," Blacker said.

FanDuel has tools to help you learn more and will have a breakfast show beginning on the Friday before Derby to catch you up to speed.

The 151st Kentucky Derby is generating excitement, with standout horses to watch, according to Christina Blacker from FanDuelTV. She highlights Journalism as a favorite, noting his impressive recent performances and superior speed figures, which make him a significant contender. Blacker also mentions the challenges faced by Journalism’s trainer, Michael McCarthy, due to recent hardships, adding a compelling narrative to the horse’s journey.

Another horse to keep an eye on is Sovereignty, trained by Bill Mott. Blacker praises his physical maturity and strong build, suggesting that the added distance of the Derby could benefit him. She also points out the underdog story of Coal Battle, trained by Lonnie Briley, who is making his Derby debut at an advanced age, and Chunk of Gold, whose young trainer adds to the race’s intrigue.

Blacker emphasizes that every horse in the Derby is deserving of their place, encouraging bettors to trust their instincts when choosing a horse. With FanDuel providing resources and insights leading up to the event, she assures that the excitement of Derby day will resonate with all participants, regardless of their chosen horse.

Title: "2025 Kentucky Derby: Hall-of-Fame Trainers and Expert Predictions for the Run for the Roses"

The 2025 Kentucky Derby post positions were unveiled over the weekend, and the field for the 151st Run for the Roses is loaded with 2025 Kentucky Derby horses trained by Hall-of-Famers. Bob Baffert, Mark Casse, Steve Asmussen, Todd Pletcher, Bill Mott, and D. Wayne Lukas are all expected to have at least one horse in the 2025 Kentucky Derby lineup at Churchill Downs on Saturday. Brad Cox isn’t in the Hall of Fame, but he is well on his way with two Eclipse Awards for outstanding trainer, wins in the 2021 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, and nine Breeders’ Cup wins in the decade since his first stakes win. Cox has one entry this year, Final Gambit, who is 30-1 in the 2025 Kentucky Derby odds. Post time is 6:57 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, Journalism, trained by 2021 Preakness Stakes-winning trainer Michael McCarthy, is the 3-1 favorite after impressing with graded-stakes wins in the Los Alamitos Futurity, San Felipe Stakes, and Santa Anita Derby. Before making any 2025 Kentucky Derby picks, you’ll want to see what SportsLine horse racing expert Gene Menez has to say before making any 2025 Kentucky Derby picks or horse racing predictions.

A former reporter and editor at Sports Illustrated, Menez covered an array of sports, including horse racing, for the magazine and its website for almost 14 years. Between 2010 and 2012, he served as SI’s handicapper for the Triple Crown races and correctly predicted Super Saver to win the Kentucky Derby in 2010.

In 2015, Menez accurately gave out the Kentucky Derby superfecta, which paid $1,268.20 for $2. In 2017, he tweeted out his Kentucky Derby picks, including Always Dreaming to win, and hit the Pick 4, which paid almost $6,900 on a $1 bet.

In May of last year, Menez nailed 18-1 Mystik Dan as a live longshot in the Kentucky Derby. In November, he crushed the late Pick 4 on Breeders’ Cup Saturday for a $5,303 jackpot. This year, he hit the winner and exacta in the Holy Bull Stakes and the winner, trifecta, and superfecta in the Florida Derby.

For the Run for the Roses, Menez has handicapped the 2025 Kentucky Derby field, made his picks, and constructed his best bets.

Top 2025 Kentucky Derby predictions

One of Menez’ surprising 2025 Kentucky Derby picks: He is fading Sandman (6-1), even though he won the Arkansas Derby and is one of the top 2025 Kentucky Derby favorites. Sire Tapit is one of the most successful breeders in the history of North American horse racing, and his progeny have had a particular affinity for the Belmont Stakes, with four of his offspring winning the final leg of the Triple Crown. However, he has never produced a Kentucky Derby winner.

Sandman’s connections are also winless in the Kentucky Derby, with trainer Mark Casse failing to hit the board in 10 previous tries and jockey Jose Ortiz going 0-for-9 on his Kentucky Derby mounts. Despite a $1.2 million purchase price before the start of his two-year-old season, he didn’t manage a win in his first four starts in stakes races. Then, he benefited from a blistering early pace at Oaklawn Park that eventually fell apart to storm to a come-from-behind win at the Arkansas Derby. Menez doesn’t think he can replicate that ride against a better Kentucky Derby field.

Menez thinks a late charge to a third-place finish is the best-case scenario for Sandman, making him a horse to fade in the Kentucky Derby 2025.

How to make 2025 Kentucky Derby bets, picks

Menez’ top pick is a horse who "is bred to only get better with the added distance." He’s also high on a double-digit longshot who owns "the most awesome turn of foot of any of the Kentucky Derby hopefuls."

Title: Woodbine Entertainment and AGCO Reach Settlement to Enhance Horse Racing Safety Following Equine Injuries

Content:

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and Woodbine Entertainment have officially reached a settlement after a troubling series of equine injuries in the fall of 2024. Woodbine, while not contesting the AGCO’s findings, has agreed to adopt new corrective actions to enhance horse racing safety at its Toronto-based racetrack.

Findings from AGCO’s investigation:

The AGCO launched an investigation following 19 horse injuries that occurred between October 28 and December 15, 2024, on Woodbine’s Tapeta surface. Out of these incidents, ten horses had to be euthanized, including three on a single day, November 9, prompting the cancellation of the remainder of that day’s racing card.

The investigation revealed serious deficiencies in Woodbine’s maintenance of the Tapeta surface, a material generally regarded as one of the safest in the industry. Inspectors found that grooming practices were substandard, surface depth measurements were inconsistent, and maintenance equipment was not properly kept. Furthermore, the investigation pointed to the use of undertrained and inexperienced staff and the absence of standardized maintenance protocols.

Despite Tapeta’s reputation for safety, the lapses in proper care severely undermined the track’s integrity. The AGCO emphasized that ensuring the highest track standards is vital to safeguarding the well-being of racehorses in Ontario.

In response to the findings, Woodbine has agreed to implement a series of enforceable safety measures under the settlement terms:

Independent Track Oversight: Woodbine will retain two internationally recognized track safety experts for a two-year period. These experts will conduct quarterly inspections of the Tapeta surface and report their findings to both Woodbine and the AGCO.

New Track Surfaces Committee: A committee will be created to monitor track conditions and recommend improvements throughout the racing season. This group will include representatives from Woodbine, the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA), and the Jockey’s Benefit Association of Canada (JBAC).

Board-Level Supervision: Woodbine’s Board of Directors will task its Governance and Compliance Committee with overseeing the Track Surfaces Committee’s activities.

Failure to comply with these measures could trigger regulatory action, including a $200,000 monetary penalty. Additionally, Woodbine Entertainment has agreed to donate $200,000 to support equine aftercare initiatives in Ontario, with equal contributions directed to the LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society and the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance.

Proactive safety improvements already underway:

Before finalizing the agreement with the AGCO, Woodbine had already undertaken a series of internal reforms to improve track safety. These include hiring a full-time track maintenance specialist with international experience, acquiring state-of-the-art maintenance equipment, and introducing advanced monitoring tools like an Integrated Racetrack Surface Tester to track moisture, temperature, and cushion depth.

Moreover, the track was renovated near the five-and-a-half furlong marker to enhance drainage and consistency. New maintenance protocols and clarified staff responsibilities have been implemented to ensure that the track is consistently managed to the highest standards.

Beyond Woodbine’s own commitments, the AGCO plans to introduce broader reforms across Ontario’s horse racing sector. These measures include strengthening veterinary oversight, closely monitoring horses returning from the veterinarian’s list, and establishing new guidelines regulating race frequency and certain therapeutic treatments.
