Title: Innovative Horse-Riding Simulator Enhances Therapeutic Experiences for Individuals with Disabilities

A new horse-riding simulator was launched at the Victoria Therapeutic Riding Club (VTRA) in Saanichton, providing individuals with disabilities, like six-year-old Casey, a realistic riding experience. Casey, who has cerebellar ataxia, has been riding at VTRA for two years and has shown significant improvements in mobility. The event celebrated the collaboration between CanAssist at the University of Victoria and VTRA, made possible by a generous donation from Murray and Lynda Farmer.

The simulator combines CanAssist’s “Motivex” software with the MiraColt motion simulator, creating an immersive experience that synchronizes the horse’s movements with a visual display. This technology allows riders to experience a smooth, rhythmic gait, which can aid in developing balance and reflexes. Physiotherapist Kim Anderson emphasized the therapeutic benefits, noting that the simulator can provide up to 3,000 movement impulses in just half an hour.

VTRA serves around 300 participants annually, and the introduction of the simulator is expected to enhance access to therapeutic riding for individuals of all ages with various disabilities. The community launch event allowed attendees to experience the simulator firsthand, highlighting its potential to foster wellness and connection through inclusive recreation.
