Owen Heffer’s journey from selling tipping sheets outside Greyville racecourse in 1984 to owning the venue culminated this week with the KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulatory Authority approving Hollywood Sportsbook Holdings’ acquisition of Gold Circle, the province’s horse racing operator. This acquisition comes as Gold Circle faces severe financial difficulties, prompting Hollywoodbets to propose a R500-million rescue package, which shareholders eagerly accepted.
Hollywoodbets has established itself as a significant player in the sporting community, investing millions into various sports and charitable initiatives across KwaZulu-Natal and beyond. Their sponsorships include revitalizing Cape Town horse racing, supporting the Durban July, and backing local cricket and rugby teams. The company aims to rejuvenate the struggling horse racing industry in the province, which has faced challenges due to economic conditions and changes in the betting landscape.
The planned investment will not only preserve around 6,000 jobs but also modernize facilities, increase prize money, and enhance the racing program. Upgrades are already underway at key venues, including the Hollywoodbets Greyville Polytrack and the Summerveld Training Centre. The acquisition’s timing coincides with the KZN Champions’ Season, highlighting the importance of these developments for the future of horse racing in the region.
