Title: "From ‘Cocaine Fairy’ to Alleged Burglary Kingpin: The Troubling Case of Michael Ray Downing"

Michael Ray Downing, known for his past drug offenses, was recently arrested in Hungry Horse for his alleged involvement in a burglary ring that has stolen approximately $1 million in tools, vehicles, and other items from seasonal homes and local businesses. Downing, who gained notoriety as the “Cocaine Fairy” after a dramatic drug bust in 2006, has a lengthy criminal history, including a federal conviction for conspiracy to distribute cocaine, which led to a 70-month prison sentence and subsequent probation violations.

Law enforcement officials, including Flathead County Sheriff Brian Heino, have linked Downing to over 15 burglary cases across Flathead County, primarily targeting vacant residences. His latest arrest occurred after he attempted to steal a safe using a chain and a side-by-side vehicle. Investigators are also examining connections between Downing and the theft of tools valued at $35,000 from contractors working on the Columbia Falls skateboard park.

Two accomplices, James Ekvall and Ashley Bruns, have also been arrested in connection with the burglary ring. Sheriff Heino emphasized the seriousness of these crimes and the commitment of law enforcement to protect the community and hold those responsible accountable. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
