Sanandaj, in western Iran, recently hosted its inaugural festival dedicated to Kurdish purebred horses, attracting equestrians and horse enthusiasts from various provinces. A total of 75 riders participated, showcasing their horses and demonstrating traditional Kurdish horseback riding techniques. The event aimed to promote awareness of the Kurdish horse breed and foster community engagement through cultural activities, including live Kurdish music.
The Kurdish horse, recognized as one of Iran’s indigenous breeds, is currently undergoing international registration. This breed, which originates from the Kurdish regions of Iran, is considered one of the world’s most valuable horse breeds, with approximately 3,000 purebreds in Kordestan province. The festival highlighted the importance of preserving the genetic legacy of this ancient breed.
Organized by the Kordestan Equestrian Federation and the Sanandaj Municipality, the festival served as a platform to celebrate Kurdish heritage and promote the unique skills associated with horseback riding in the region.
