Katy Green celebrated an emotional victory at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, winning the working hunter championship aboard her 16-year-old mare, Vulcanite. This win was particularly poignant for Katy, as it marked a tribute to her late friend Rory Gilsenan, who had previously won the championship with Vulcanite in 2016 before his passing from a brain tumor in 2020. Katy, who had opted to ride a different horse during that earlier competition due to being six months pregnant, expressed deep affection for Vulcanite, whom she has nursed back to health after various injuries.
In the same competition, Rachel Turner secured the reserve champion title riding Ernie Big, another 16-year-old horse. This marked Ernie’s fourth clear round at the show, and Rachel noted his popularity with the crowd and his eagerness to please. The duo is set to compete next at Hickstead, continuing their successful partnership.
Additionally, Hannah Horton achieved her first win of the day with the home-bred mare Sixties Icon in the working show horse class. The seven-year-old mare has shown promise in both show horse and eventing competitions, having previously placed second at the working show horse final at Hickstead. Hannah’s enthusiasm for her horse was evident as she described Sixties Icon as a “cool pony,” highlighting their strong start to the season.
