Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae has raised significant concerns regarding the ongoing roadworks in Fossa, criticizing the safety of the new layout and questioning the value for money. He highlighted that the carriageway has been narrowed to 20 feet to accommodate “active travel” initiatives, which has upset locals who are worried about the difficulties faced by buses and large vehicles trying to navigate the area. Healy-Rae called for a halt to further work until a thorough review is conducted.
The road, heavily trafficked by tourists and locals, was previously the widest section but is now causing issues for agricultural vehicles and hauliers. Healy-Rae also expressed apprehension about similar proposed works on the N22, urging for a proper assessment of the projects’ value before proceeding. The Taoiseach acknowledged these concerns and emphasized the need for a thorough evaluation of such initiatives.
At a recent Killarney Municipal District Meeting, local councillors echoed Healy-Rae’s worries about the safety of narrowed lanes for larger vehicles. While Kerry County Council defended the design as compliant with legal standards, concerns remain about the practical implications for road users, particularly large vehicles, as the project aims to enhance pedestrian and cyclist facilities.
