Avontuur Estate has announced the end of its thoroughbred breeding operations, marking a significant shift for South Africa’s horse racing community. Established in the late 1980s by Tony Taberer, the estate has been renowned for producing celebrated racehorses, maintaining a philosophy of “quality over quantity” under the leadership of Taberer’s sons and General Manager Pippa Mickleburgh.
The estate gained prominence with the acquisition of the European sprinter Var in 2005, whose offspring, including champions like Val De Ra and Legal Eagle, achieved notable success on the racetrack. Legal Eagle alone earned over R12 million in prize money, reinforcing Avontuur’s esteemed reputation in the racing world.
Despite the cessation of its breeding division, Avontuur Estate remains a leading wine producer, with its wines reflecting its rich heritage. Visitors can still enjoy wine tastings and gourmet dining, ensuring that the estate’s legacy continues through both its equine champions and its contributions to South Africa’s viticulture.
