Pam, a tiny Shetland foal born at just 5.2hh (22 inches) and weighing 15kg, has captured hearts at World Horse Welfare’s Glenda Spooner Farm in Somerset. Born safely in July to Sophie, a rescued Shetland mare, Pam is thriving with good early experiences and veterinary care. While both have secure homes, the charity uses Pam’s story to highlight the broader issue of responsible breeding, urging potential breeders to consider whether they can guarantee lifelong care for any foal they produce.
World Horse Welfare emphasizes the significant costs involved in caring for foals, including vet visits, vaccinations, and microchipping, and warns that even small-scale breeding contributes to the growing number of horses needing homes. The charity has launched a quiz to encourage thoughtful breeding decisions and continues to care for numerous rescued horses, including nine foals born at their centers this year. They invite support to help cover ongoing care costs for Pam and other vulnerable horses.
