Tim Hayes, Renowned Equestrian and Author, Dies at 80

Tim Hayes, an internationally renowned equestrian, author, and instructor at Vermont State University, passed away on August 17 at age 80 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. Hayes discovered horses at age 47, which transformed his life and helped him overcome alcoholism and personal trauma. He became a leading advocate of natural horsemanship, emphasizing gentle, humane techniques to build bonds between horses and humans. Hayes authored two influential books—Riding Home: The Power of Horses to Heal and Horses, Humans and Love: Powerful Lessons From the Herd—highlighting how equine therapy aids people with PTSD, addiction, and emotional struggles, and exploring the social virtues horses embody that humans can learn from.

Hayes’ work resonated globally, earning admiration from readers and equestrian communities alike, including a foreword by Robert Redford in his first book. He believed the altruistic love demonstrated by horses offers a model for improving human relationships and society’s future. A celebration of his life is planned for September 6 at his home in Johnson, Vermont, honoring his legacy of healing and compassion through horsemanship.
