Tim Drake, owner of Silver Duck stable in King City, dedicates himself to the demanding and deeply rewarding work of foaling mares each year from February to June. Living in a small room adjacent to the barn, he vigilantly monitors mares overnight, ready to assist with births that can be unpredictable and require hands-on intervention. Despite the physical toll and long hours, Drake’s passion for witnessing the miracle of life and the bond between mare and foal keeps him committed. His experience spans over 40 years and more than 800 foalings, and he emphasizes the importance of understanding each mare’s habits well before foaling to ensure smooth deliveries.
Silver Duck stable, located on part of the former Kinghaven Farms property, also provides post-surgery care for horses and collaborates with local veterinary clinics. Drake’s approach is grounded in practical knowledge and a deep respect for each horse’s individuality, regardless of their pedigree or value. He values the teamwork involved in racing success, from trainers to jockeys, but sees his role as foundational in starting a foal’s journey. His lifelong dedication reflects a profound love for horses and the equine industry, viewing his work not just as a job but as a way of life.
