Thunder Bay Therapeutic Riding Association Moves to New Facility, Continues Supporting Riders with Disabilities

The Thunder Bay Therapeutic Riding Association (TBTRA) has been providing therapeutic horseback riding sessions for people of all ages and abilities for decades, recently relocating to a new facility at Visions Farm in Murillo, Ontario. The program, now led by a new team including director Wendy Handy, offers twice-weekly riding sessions where participants, like autistic rider Janna Wakefield, build skills, confidence, and community in a supportive environment. Each session is carefully managed with safety measures and trained horses accustomed to various stimuli, ensuring a positive experience that combines physical exercise and cognitive stimulation.

Volunteers play a crucial role in the TBTRA’s operations, from assisting during rides to caring for the horses throughout the week. Many volunteers have been involved for decades, but the organization continues to seek more community support and funding to sustain its valuable services. Fundraising efforts and volunteer recruitment are ongoing priorities, as the program relies heavily on community involvement to maintain its horses and provide therapeutic riding opportunities to those who benefit greatly from them. More information is available on the TBTRA’s Facebook page and website.
