Laois County Council has impounded three stray horses found on roadsides in Portlaoise on January 16, 2026. The horses—a bay male from Mountrath Road, a black male, and a bay female both from Green Mill Lane—are now held awaiting collection by their owners, rehoming, or possible disposal after 5 pm on January 22. Owners must contact the council, provide the horse’s passport and registration details, and pay all relevant fees to reclaim their animals.
Under Laois County Council’s Control of Horses Bye-Laws, horses can be impounded if they are stray, causing nuisance, or not properly controlled, among other reasons. If unclaimed after five working days, the horses may be rehomed or disposed of. The council’s housing section manages stray horses, which are generally rehomed through the pound in compliance with legal requirements mandating passports for all horses, ponies, and donkeys in Ireland.
