Douglas Bay Horse Trams has welcomed three new foals born to mares Annabelle, Emma, and Annie, continuing a horse breeding program established by Douglas Borough Council in the mid-1970s to ensure the long-term sustainability of the historic horse-drawn tramway. The program breeds horses locally, typically Clydesdale and Welsh cob crosses, raising foals in familiar surroundings before training them to become tram horses around the age of four. The current horses work limited hours daily and receive careful care, with retired horses moving to a dedicated sanctuary.
The recent foals, two skewbald colts and one bay filly, were born in May and June and will eventually join the tram service team. To engage the community, an online competition will be held to name the new arrivals. This breeding initiative supports one of the last remaining horse tramways in the world, preserving a unique cultural and historical tradition.
