Three New Dog Breeds Earn American Kennel Club Recognition in 2026

As of January 1, the American Kennel Club (AKC) has officially recognized three new dog breeds: the Russian tsvetnaya bolonka, the basset Fauve de Bretagne, and the Teddy Roosevelt terrier. These breeds, each with distinct histories and characteristics, have gained enough prominence in the U.S. to meet the AKC’s rigorous criteria, which include pedigree documentation, breed standards, and representation by breed clubs. With this addition, the total number of AKC-recognized breeds rises to 205, allowing these dogs to compete in AKC conformation and other events.

The Russian tsvetnaya bolonka is a small, playful companion breed developed in post-WWII Soviet Leningrad, known for its dark curly coat and affectionate nature. The basset Fauve de Bretagne is a hardy, sociable hound with a history dating back to 16th-century French aristocracy, valued for its hunting skills and versatility. The Teddy Roosevelt terrier, named after the U.S. president but not created by him, is an energetic American breed originally considered a variant of the rat terrier, known for alertness and rodent control. Each breed offers unique traits that make them excellent companions and competitors in various AKC events.
