Thousands of Indonesian Workers to Protest Nationwide on August 28 Demanding Wage Hikes and Labor Reforms

Thousands of workers and union members in Indonesia are set to protest on August 28, 2025, with key demonstrations planned in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) building in Jakarta, as well as at Jakarta City Hall and the Horse Statue in Central Jakarta. The protest, organized by the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation and led by Said Iqbal, will involve at least 10,000 workers from various industrial areas including Karawang, Bekasi, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Jakarta. Simultaneous demonstrations are also expected across multiple provinces with significant industrial zones such as Banten, West Java, Central Java, East Java, North Sumatra, Aceh, and several others.

The protesters are demanding several key changes, including an 8.5-10 percent increase in the 2026 minimum wage, an end to layoffs and the outsourcing system, and tax reforms to alleviate burdens on workers and the general public. They also call for the urgent passage of a new labor law draft following a recent Constitutional Court ruling, the enactment of the Asset Seizure Bill, and revisions to the Election Law. These demands reflect broader concerns about workers’ rights and economic justice in Indonesia.
