The Unsung Heroes of Maryland’s Horseracing: Meet the Outriders

Maryland’s horseracing industry employs over 20,000 individuals, including well-known roles like jockeys and trainers. However, outriders, often referred to as the “cops” of racing, play a crucial yet less recognized role. These riders are responsible for ensuring the safety of both horses and jockeys during races, intervening in emergencies, and maintaining order on the track. KayMarie Kreidel, a notable outrider, gained fame for her heroic act during the 2019 Preakness when she captured a runaway horse, showcasing the high-stakes nature of their work.

Outriders like KayMarie begin their day early, preparing for the safety of hundreds of horses during morning workouts and races. Their responsibilities include accompanying nervous horses, managing runaway situations, and providing immediate assistance to injured jockeys. Wearing distinctive red vests for visibility, they are trained to react quickly and instinctively to emergencies, emphasizing the need for fearlessness and strong horsemanship skills.

Despite the demanding nature of the job, which often yields minimal financial reward, KayMarie expresses a deep passion for her work. Weighing only 110 pounds, she relies on her understanding of horses rather than physical strength. With only a few outriders at each track, the position is elite and driven by a love for horses, as KayMarie states she cannot imagine doing anything else.
