The Thoroughbred: Celebrating Oldham County’s Rich Horse Racing Legacy

The Oldham County History Center has launched a new exhibit titled “The Thoroughbred: Horses, People, and Farms of Oldham County,” celebrating nearly a century of the county’s rich legacy in Thoroughbred horse racing. The exhibit showcases the deep historical and cultural ties between the community and the sport, featuring artifacts, interactive displays, and stories of notable farms, champion horses, and the people who have sustained the industry. Highlights include the history of Harmony Landing, the breeding of legendary stallions, and the achievements of Hermitage Farm, which produced numerous stakes winners including the 1953 Kentucky Derby winner Dark Star.

Designed to engage visitors of all ages, the exhibit offers hands-on learning experiences such as comparing racing shoes and examining horse teeth, while also honoring the trainers, veterinarians, and workers behind the scenes. Running through June 6, 2026, the exhibit is included with regular museum admission and is complemented by special events like panel discussions, an Industry Night, and a Post-Derby Brunch. The Oldham County History Center aims to preserve and share this living legacy, emphasizing the passion and economic importance of the Thoroughbred industry in the region.
