Doc Matthews, a compelling figure in Mary’s story, rose from being an orphan on the streets of St Kilda to leading the Mounted Police after serving in the army and working on the Burma Railway. His deep passion for horses defined his life, particularly his dedication to training a Thoroughbred named Aintree Boy, which he believed had the potential to excel despite the rarity of training Thoroughbreds to Grand Prix dressage levels at the time.
Without formal dressage training, Doc relied on his relentless curiosity and self-study, meticulously analyzing footage from the Pan American Games to master complex Grand Prix movements like piaffe and passage. His innovative approach and determination highlight a remarkable journey of learning and achievement in the equestrian world.
