The Rednote Ban Falls Short: Taiwan Must Block All PRC Social Media Platforms

The Taiwanese government recently imposed a one-year ban on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu (Rednote) due to widespread fraud and severe cybersecurity violations, including unauthorized data collection and sharing. Despite criticism from pro-China parties and the PRC, who framed the ban as an attack on free speech, the government emphasized its duty to protect users, especially since Rednote lacks a local presence and thus evades domestic regulation. Premier Cho Jung-tai highlighted that unlike other platforms with local offices subject to regulation, Rednote’s non-compliance and security risks justified the ban, which could become permanent if issues remain unaddressed.

Beyond fraud and cybersecurity, the article stresses the broader threat posed by PRC social media apps as vectors for disinformation and surveillance, given PRC laws mandating data sharing with the state. This disinformation undermines democratic discourse by eroding trust and factual truth, a problem exacerbated by AI-generated misinformation flooding social media. The author argues that Taiwan’s ban on Rednote is insufficient and calls for a comprehensive ban on all PRC social media platforms, alongside stronger legal frameworks, to safeguard Taiwan’s information environment and national security.
