Tammy Stackhouse founded The Magical Meadows in 2007, a nonprofit organization in Warsaw that provides therapeutic horseback riding for individuals with disabilities, at-risk children, veterans, and first responders. Initially starting with just one rider, the program has grown significantly, now serving around 120 riders weekly with a team of nine staff members and 23 horses on a 42-acre facility.
The therapeutic benefits of horseback riding extend beyond physical improvements, aiding in emotional and social development as well. Stackhouse emphasizes that the movement of the horse mimics human muscle movement, which can enhance coordination, communication, and confidence in riders. The program has been particularly impactful for children, allowing them to experience a sense of accomplishment and joy as they engage in activities often deemed challenging.
Currently, The Magical Meadows is expanding its facilities through the Growing With Heart campaign, which includes plans for two new indoor riding arenas. One arena will focus on veterans and first responders, while the other aims to provide additional classes for disabled riders. The organization relies heavily on volunteers, welcoming individuals with no prior horse experience to assist in various roles, fostering a community that supports both riders and volunteers alike.
