The Legendary Rivalry: War Admiral vs Seabiscuit

War Admiral, a Thoroughbred racehorse, won the American Triple Crown in 1937, capturing the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes. He was the son of Man o’ War and was foaled in 1934 at Faraway Farm in Kentucky. War Admiral was a late bloomer, but he won the Triple Crown in 1937, becoming the fourth American horse to achieve this feat.

The Kentucky Derby in 1937 saw War Admiral as the favourite, and he won the race wire to wire. He went on to win the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, securing his place as a Triple Crown champion. War Admiral was named Horse of the Year for 1937 after his outstanding season.

A highly anticipated race between War Admiral and Seabiscuit was scheduled for 1938, but it was postponed multiple times due to weather and health issues. When the race finally took place, Seabiscuit emerged as the unexpected winner, beating War Admiral by four lengths. War Admiral ran one more race in 1938 before being retired to stud, and he was inducted into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 1958.
