The Lagotto Romagnolo: A Royal Boost in Popularity

The Lagotto Romagnolo breed saw a significant increase in popularity following the announcement of the new royal arrival, with searches on The Kennel Club’s website up 723 percent. The breed gained attention after winning Crufts in 2023, with 327 puppies registered that year. Despite a 57% increase in popularity over the past five years, the breed is still relatively unknown in the UK.

The Kennel Club predicts that the King’s choice of the Lagotto Romagnolo will boost interest in the breed, similar to how the late Queen’s Pembrokeshire Welsh Corgi saw a surge in popularity after key moments in the spotlight. The Kennel Club reminds potential dog owners that not all breeds are suitable for everyone, and encourages research before choosing a breed. Crufts, where people can meet the Lagotto Romagnolo and other breeds, begins on March 6 at the NEC in Birmingham.

Kennel Club spokesperson Bill Lambert praises the Lagotto Romagnolo breed as well-suited to the King’s active lifestyle and interest in truffle hunting. While Crufts wins typically have limited impact on breed popularity, they can raise awareness for smaller, lesser-known breeds. The Kennel Club emphasizes the importance of research when choosing a breed of dog and encourages people to visit Crufts to learn more about different breeds.
