The Jockey Club Responds to Mike Repole’s Baseless Accusations and Defends Industry Contributions

Since 2023, Mike Repole has launched a campaign of public accusations against The Jockey Club and other Thoroughbred organizations, alleging conflicts of interest, financial mismanagement, neglect of aftercare, and failure to address industry challenges. The Jockey Club’s Board of Stewards strongly refutes these claims, emphasizing that Repole’s accusations are based on incomplete facts and falsehoods, lacking concrete solutions. They highlight The Jockey Club’s significant financial contributions—nearly $120 million over 15 years—to racing, breeding, aftercare, and safety initiatives, and note improvements in equine safety under the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA).

The Board criticizes Repole’s approach as divisive and self-serving, accusing him of attempting to position himself as the sport’s “Commissioner” without presenting viable plans. They stress that industry challenges like the declining foal crop stem from complex economic and regulatory factors beyond The Jockey Club’s control. Despite multiple attempts to engage Repole constructively, his responses have been one-sided and accusatory. The Board commits to continuing collaborative efforts to sustain and grow Thoroughbred racing based on facts and shared responsibility.
