President Theodore Roosevelt visited Wyoming three times in the early 1900s, making time for horseback riding during each visit. In 1900, while campaigning for Vice President, he rode at the Daley Ranch in Rawlins, showcasing his riding skills. In 1903, as President, he took a 54-mile trail ride from Laramie to Cheyenne with Wyoming dignitaries, impressing the Wyoming Tribune with his stamina.
During his 1903 visit, Roosevelt was gifted a horse named Ragalon, known for its speed and intelligence. Ragalon could gallop, trot, count, distinguish colors, bow, and roll over on command. The Burt Family papers at UW’s American Heritage Center provide more information on Roosevelt’s interactions with Ragalon and his love for horseback riding.
