The Haunting Trail: The Murder of Justine Vanderschoot and the Key Witness Who Uncovered the Truth

In 2003, Matt Scribner discovered a freshly dug hole along a horse trail in the Sierra Nevada foothills, which turned out to be the burial site of 17-year-old Justine Vanderschoot. Scribner later realized he had seen the hole just days before Justine’s disappearance and contacted the sheriff’s department, becoming a key witness in the murder case. Justine’s boyfriend, Danny Bezemer, and his roommate, Brandon Fernandez, were arrested and charged with her murder.

Justine’s disappearance was reported by her parents, who suspected foul play due to Bezemer’s possessive behavior. FBI agent Jeff Rinek elicited a confession from Fernandez, who revealed that Bezemer had strangled Justine and made him help bury her. Both men were offered plea deals, with Bezemer pleading guilty to first-degree murder and Fernandez to second-degree murder. Fernandez later petitioned to have his conviction thrown out under a change in California law.

If Fernandez’s petition is granted, he could be released on time served, which worries Justine’s family who believe he is still dangerous. The Vanderschoots are fighting for justice for Justine, who they say has no voice in the matter. The case highlights the tragic consequences of a toxic relationship and the impact of changes in the legal system on criminal convictions.
