The Green Wave Traffic Signal System Is Coming Soon to El Paso and Across the USA

A traffic signal timing system called the “green wave” is being implemented across the USA, including in El Paso, to improve traffic flow by synchronizing green lights along a route. Traffic engineers set an optimal speed and time the lights so that if a vehicle travels at that speed, it can pass through multiple intersections without stopping. This system, which has existed for decades in some areas like northeast El Paso, aims to reduce stops and improve driving efficiency.

In El Paso, an older green wave system reportedly operated along a stretch of Dyer Street, timed for about 45 mph, allowing drivers to catch consecutive green lights if they maintained that speed. While the system is designed for specific speeds, its effectiveness at higher speeds remains uncertain. Overall, the green wave represents a growing trend in traffic management to enhance flow and reduce congestion.
