The Flemish Horse Sector: A Significant Economic Player Facing Profitability Challenges

A new study by Professor Stijn Vanormelingen reveals that the Flemish horse sector is a significant economic contributor, with around 200,000 horses in the region and over 6,000 people employed directly or indirectly. The sector generates approximately 1.43 billion euros in turnover annually, with exports of horses—mainly high-quality sport horses—exceeding 200 million euros, primarily to the United States. Larger professional breeding farms dominate international sales and profitability, while smaller businesses like riding schools and livery yards often struggle financially due to rising costs and narrow margins.

Despite the impressive economic figures, the sector faces challenges as only just over half of the businesses are profitable, highlighting a vulnerability beneath the surface. Passion for horses drives many breeders and hobbyists who sustain the ecosystem, even when profits are limited. The sector’s international strength is rooted in centuries of expertise, evolving from the renowned Belgian Draught Horse to world-class sport horses. This blend of passion and economics is both a strength and a risk, underscoring the need for careful management to ensure the sector’s sustainable future.
