The Kentucky Derby, a prestigious horse racing event held annually since 1875, is set to celebrate its 151st edition on the first Saturday of May. This year, the race features a record-tying total purse of $5 million, which will be awarded to the top five finishers, making it a significant milestone for owners and trainers alike.
In 2025, the distribution of the purse will see the first-place winner taking home $3.1 million, with the jockey receiving $310,000. The second-place finisher will earn $1 million, while the third, fourth, and fifth places will receive $500,000, $250,000, and $150,000, respectively. This purse is notably the highest among the Triple Crown races, surpassing the $2 million purses of both the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
Additionally, Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will be absent from this year’s Derby due to an extended suspension from Churchill Downs, impacting one of the sport’s most prominent figures.
