The 150th running of the Preakness Stakes is set for May 17 at Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course, marking the last race before the venue undergoes significant renovations. The Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the Triple Crown, will feature a nine-horse field, with Journalism, who finished second in the Kentucky Derby, as a leading favorite. Notably, Sovereignty, the Derby winner, will not compete in this race.
The renovation plans for Pimlico, approved by the Maryland Board of Public Works, aim to transform the historic racetrack into a modern facility that will host over 100 racing days annually, compared to the current 15. The redevelopment will include a new clubhouse inspired by local landmarks and additional amenities like a hotel and event space, benefiting the surrounding Park Heights community.
Traffic modifications will be in effect around Pimlico during the event, with various road closures and one-way traffic patterns implemented from May 15 to May 18. These changes are part of the preparations for the anticipated influx of attendees for the Preakness Stakes.
