Texas Horse Rescue Owner Alleges Threats and Unjustified Euthanasia During Animal Seizure

In Gonzales County, Texas, nearly 100 animals were seized from Meadow Haven Horse Rescue and Sanctuary, and nine horses were euthanized during an investigation into alleged animal cruelty and neglect. The rescue’s director, Darla Cherry, claims authorities acted aggressively and without proper justification, threatening to take her dogs if she did not comply with their demands. Cherry described the euthanasia of nine horses, including a donkey, as traumatic and insisted that some animals arrived in poor condition due to their rescue status.

The Gonzales County Attorney’s Office stated the seizure was part of an ongoing investigation and that many animals were found in deplorable conditions, with euthanasia deemed the only humane option for some. Despite the seizure and euthanasia, Cherry affirmed that Meadow Haven Horse Rescue and Sanctuary remains operational and was not shut down by authorities. Efforts to obtain further comment from local officials were unsuccessful.
