Texas Bans Lab-Grown Meat Until 2027 Amid Safety Concerns and Industry Debate

Texas has recently joined several other states, including Alabama, Florida, and Indiana, in banning lab-grown meat through Senate Bill 261, authored by Senator Charles Perry. The ban, effective from September 1, 2025, will last until sometime in 2027, reflecting ongoing concerns about the safety and acceptance of this new food technology. Critics of the ban argue it is premature, highlighting the potential benefits of lab-grown meat, such as the absence of slaughterhouses, antibiotics, pesticides, and contaminants, which may make it cleaner and safer than traditional meat.

Opponents like Dr. Uma Valeti, CEO of Upside Foods, emphasize the production quality and safety advantages of cultivated meat, while some, including members of the Texas Southwest Cattle Raisers Association, caution that long-term research is still lacking. The debate continues as Texas residents await further developments to determine when lab-grown meat might be fully accepted in the state.
