Teenager with Brain Damage Gains Confidence and Independence Through Horse Therapy at RDA

Joshua Brooks, a 16-year-old from Bury St Edmunds living with brain damage caused by a rare case of chickenpox at age two, has gained confidence and independence through the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA). Initially joining the charity in 2018 to participate in horse riding sessions, Joshua found a sense of belonging and calm that helped him overcome social isolation. When he grew too tall to ride ponies, he transitioned into a volunteer role, assisting with horse care and stable duties, while also fundraising and promoting the charity in his community.

The RDA supports over 25,000 disabled people annually across the UK, relying heavily on donations and volunteers. Joshua’s story highlights the charity’s impact, with local support from equestrian brand Harry Hall, which has partnered exclusively with RDA for 2025 and raised over £5,000 to aid families like Joshua’s. The charity’s chairman and partners praise Joshua’s growth and dedication, emphasizing the importance of continued funding to sustain these vital services.
