In 2020, Emosi Rainaka, then 17, was convicted of manslaughter after recklessly riding a horse at dangerous speeds in Nadi, Fiji, which led to the fatal trampling of two-year-old Serumaia Vesibula. Despite warnings from bystanders, Rainaka whipped the horse to gallop uncontrollably, causing severe head trauma and multiple injuries that resulted in the child’s death.
The Lautoka High Court sentenced Rainaka to one year and nine months imprisonment, emphasizing the seriousness of his reckless behavior and its tragic consequences. Acting Judge Sekonaia Vodokisolomone highlighted the need for a strong deterrent message, noting that although juvenile sentencing laws cap imprisonment at two years, the gravity of the offense demanded community denunciation.
