Teen Sentenced to Nearly Two Years for Manslaughter After Fatal Horse Riding Incident

In 2020, Emosi Rainaka, then 17, was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison for manslaughter after recklessly riding a horse at dangerous speeds in Nadi, Fiji. Despite warnings to slow down, he whipped the horse, which galloped uncontrollably and fatally trampled two-year-old Serumaia Vesibula, who was waiting on the road. The child suffered severe head trauma and multiple injuries leading to death.

Acting Judge Sekonaia Vodokisolomone highlighted the seriousness of Rainaka’s actions and his disregard for public safety. Although juvenile sentencing laws limit imprisonment to two years, the judge emphasized the need for a strong deterrent and community condemnation due to the tragic loss of the child’s life.
