Tamara, Grade 1 Winner, Faces Another Setback: Requires Surgery

Tamara, a 4-year-old filly bred and owned by Spendthrift Farm, has suffered another setback that will require surgery due to an ankle injury sustained while training at Santa Anita. The injury was caused when she kicked the rail coming back from the track, resulting in a small chip that needs to be removed. Trainer Richard Mandella stated that Tamara could potentially return to racing near the end of the Del Mar summer meet.

Beholder, the offspring of Bolt d’Oro and Hall of Fame mare Beholder, won her maiden race at Del Mar in August 2023 and followed up with a Futurity score three weeks later. Despite being the favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Del Mar, Tamara finished 12th and was reported to have been injured after the race. After spending a year on the bench, she returned in November with a narrow loss in a six-furlong allowance race at Del Mar.

Tamara was initially pointed towards the La Brea (G1) at Santa Anita on December 26 before being sidelined due to an illness. She resumed training in January but suffered another injury at the end of the month. The filly has only raced once since her Grade 1 victory in the 2023 Del Mar Debutante and will now undergo surgery to address her latest setback.
