Starting in the 2026-2027 academic year, Sweet Briar College will revive its Show Team for independent equestrian competitors, a club program last offered in 2014. Unlike varsity collegiate equestrian teams where riders are assigned horses randomly, this program allows riders to train and compete consistently with their own or leased horses, fostering long-term partnerships and personalized goal-setting. The team, expected to begin with about six riders, will participate in a variety of rated and local shows across the East Coast, offering opportunities in both hunter and jumper disciplines.
The program emphasizes the benefits of a structured team environment while allowing individual competition, supported by Sweet Briar’s expert instructors and top-tier facilities, including multiple arenas, stables, and extensive trails on the 2,847-acre campus. Director Merrilee “Mimi” Wroten highlights the excitement of formalizing this program again, which will enhance the visibility and quality of Sweet Briar’s riding instruction, training, and competitive opportunities for students.
