Susan Chu: From Show Jumping to Breeders’ Cup Success with a Heart for Horse Welfare

Susan Chu’s journey into the world of Thoroughbred racing and breeding is a story of passion, dedication, and faith. Originally from Taiwan, Chu’s early life had no connection to horse racing; her interest in horses grew after moving to the U.S. and encouraging her children’s involvement in show jumping. Over time, she transitioned from supporting her children’s equestrian pursuits to becoming an owner and breeder of multiple graded stakes winners. Her entry into racing began in 2012 after attending the Kentucky Derby, which sparked her curiosity and led her to approach the sport with a business mindset. Partnering with top trainers like Bob Baffert and trusted farms such as Bridlewood, Chu has developed a successful breeding and racing operation under Tanma Corporation and Baoma Corp, producing notable horses including Breeders’ Cup winners Drefong and Nysos.

Beyond racing, Chu is deeply committed to horse welfare, emphasizing the importance of care, rehabilitation, and second careers for retired racehorses. She actively supports organizations like Old Friends and New Vocations to ensure horses have fulfilling lives after racing. Her faith plays a central role in her life and work, guiding her daily routine and business philosophy. Despite her success at the highest levels of the sport, Chu remains motivated by a genuine love for horses, treating them as family and prioritizing their happiness and well-being above all else.
