The Cheltenham Festival highlights the culmination of decades of dedication by National Hunt breeders, who face increasing economic pressures due to high inflation and low prices for jumps-bred horses. Despite these challenges, the industry must collaborate to stabilize and grow the British breeding population, which currently lags behind Ireland and France in scale. Initiatives like the revamped Elite NH Mares’ Scheme and the Great British Bonus scheme aim to enhance the quality and demand for British-bred horses, supporting breeders by improving broodmare viability and increasing market returns.
Beyond breeding, creating an optimal racing environment is crucial for developing young horses’ potential. Recent efforts such as schooling days, bonuses for point-to-point winners, and development races have strengthened the race program, especially for fillies and mares, ensuring balanced valuation and selection of broodmares. With a diverse range of successful stallions showcased at recent Cheltenham Festivals, the focus remains on securing a robust British broodmare and stallion population to maintain the prominence of GB-bred horses in future festivals.
