William Shelton and Janet Aston, property owners in Suffolk, Virginia, are facing tens of thousands of dollars in veterinary expenses after more than 20 horses were seized from their property following the discovery of six dead horses and severe neglect conditions. Both were indicted on 96 charges each related to animal neglect. A court order mandates they pay approximately $39,000 in vet bills, with $26,000 allocated to animal control and $13,000 as a civil judgment, ensuring that local taxpayers are not burdened with the costs.
Rescue organizations like Circle A Home for Horses have taken in many of the seized horses, describing their survival as miraculous given their poor condition. The vet bills for just 12 of the 18 horses they rescued have already reached $11,600 and are expected to rise, highlighting the extensive care the animals required. Community members emphasize the importance of holding the responsible parties accountable to cover these expenses.
