In Suffolk, Virginia, William Shelton and Janet Aston face nearly 100 animal neglect charges each after more than 20 horses were seized from a property where at least six horses were found dead and others living in appalling conditions, including waist-high manure and severe neglect. Local rescuers, including Michelle Farmer of Willow Woods Equine Sanctuary, described years of suffering endured by the horses, highlighting the severe lack of basic care such as feeding, hoof maintenance, and medical attention. The case has deeply disturbed the equine community, prompting rescue efforts and ongoing veterinary care for the surviving horses.
Currently, 22 horses from the case have been relocated to local rescues, with additional horses still receiving care under supervision. Although Shelton and Aston were granted visitation rights earlier in the year, they were prohibited from feeding the horses, and their current access remains unclear. Willow Woods Equine Sanctuary has launched a fundraiser to support rescued horses, including funding for necessary surgeries, and offers assistance to those unable to care for their horses properly.
