The Bureau of Land Management’s Montana/Dakotas Wild Horse and Burro Program successfully held an adoption event from May 2-4, 2025, where 26 wild horses were placed into new homes, achieving a 72% placement rate. This event highlighted the public’s ongoing interest in adopting wild horses, with BLM specialist Melissa Foster emphasizing the significance of each adoption in the broader context of wild horse conservation.
The event featured a silent auction on Friday evening, where 30 attendees helped place 13 horses, with a high bid of $350 for a dun gelding. On Saturday, a horsemanship clinic led by Mustang Matt attracted around 75 participants, resulting in two additional adoptions. Despite unfavorable weather on Sunday, the event saw a steady flow of visitors, culminating in nine successful adoptions.
The collaborative effort of BLM staff from Montana/Dakotas and Wyoming showcased their dedication to humane animal placement and land stewardship. For those who missed this event, another adoption opportunity is scheduled for June 6-8 in Livingston, Montana, where 41 untrained horses and burros will be available for adoption.
