The Bureau of Land Management’s Montana/Dakotas Wild Horse and Burro Program successfully held the Upper Yellowstone Adoption Event in Livingston, Montana, from June 6–8, 2025, where 40 of 56 wild horses and burros were adopted, achieving a 71% placement rate. The event showcased a variety of animals, including untrained horses, burros, and saddle-trained mustangs gentled by the Wyoming Honor Farm, which were auctioned off for $1,900 and $1,450. The yearlings, noted for their diverse and striking colors, were particularly popular, with all being adopted by the event’s end. Additionally, a “Next Steps” clinic led by Mustang Matt provided valuable training guidance to new adopters.
The event highlighted the program’s mission to responsibly manage wild herds by placing excess animals into private care while educating the public. Enthusiastic adopters, including one who camped overnight to secure a specific yearling, demonstrated strong community support. For those who missed this opportunity, the program announced the upcoming Bitterroot Valley Wild Horse & Burro Adoption Event on June 28–29, 2025, in Hamilton, Montana, offering over 40 animals for adoption, including yearlings and mature mares and geldings.
