The annual Sandwich Fair saw a strong turnout in its open livestock shows, particularly in the Draft Horse category, which featured more exhibitors than previous years, including impressive Clydesdales with their distinctive feathered legs. Draft Horse Superintendent Phil Nielson highlighted the addition of new classes and the engaging atmosphere that keeps participants and spectators involved throughout the day.
While other livestock categories such as swine, dairy goats, dairy cattle, and sheep experienced slightly fewer or stable entries, Livestock Superintendent Ken Tyrrell attributed this to broader economic challenges and a decline in farmers involved in animal agriculture in Illinois. Despite this, the quality of entries has improved, with superintendents like Brad Temple emphasizing the hard work behind the scenes. Most open livestock shows have concluded, with junior competitions continuing through the weekend.
