Still Waters Refuge, a new equine therapy center in Saint Leonard, Maryland, was founded by therapist and lifelong horse enthusiast Christi Doyle. With 16 years of experience, Doyle uses her seven horses to provide therapeutic services for individuals with cognitive or physical disabilities and mental health challenges. The therapy leverages the horse’s natural three-dimensional movement to aid physical rehabilitation and cognitive development, while also offering a safe space for trauma survivors to build confidence, set boundaries, and heal emotionally through their bond with the horses.
Doyle’s approach is highly personalized, matching clients with horses that suit their specific needs and continuously adapting treatment plans. The facility, purchased in April, is designed as a sanctuary focused on healing rather than training or boarding. Doyle’s deep connection to horses and her professional background in family and marriage therapy underpin her commitment to helping clients transform and find their best selves in the peaceful, nature-surrounded environment of Southern Maryland.
