Stacy Pearsall’s Mission to Preserve the Endangered European Brabant Draft Horse in South Carolina

Stacy Pearsall, a decorated U.S. Air Force veteran, lives on a 40-acre ranch in Harleyville, South Carolina, where she raises and conserves the endangered European Brabant draft horse breed. These massive yet gentle horses, weighing nearly 2,000 pounds, are known for their calm and nurturing nature. Pearsall’s herd includes a purebred stallion and several mares, some pregnant, along with other animals like a thoroughbred and donkeys. She finds deep relaxation and honesty in her relationship with the horses, emphasizing a mutual training bond.

Pearsall’s conservation efforts focus on preserving the European Brabant, the oldest draft horse breed and ancestor to many others like the Clydesdale. Originating from the Low Countries of Europe, these horses are now being protected in South Carolina’s Lowcountry through Pearsall’s work with the European Brabant Registry of America, which she co-founded. The registry certifies breed heritage and supports breeding programs to ensure the survival of this rare and majestic breed.
