On 22 January 2026, Cape of Good Hope SPCA inspectors and the City of Cape Town Law Enforcement Animal Control Unit intervened in Kensington after spotting an overloaded pony struggling to pull a cart. The pony was found to be slightly underweight and burdened with a load exceeding three times its body weight, including heavy scrap and a motor vehicle shell, causing severe strain on its muscles, joints, and breathing. This situation violated the Animals Protection Act and relevant standards for animal-drawn carts.
The pony was immediately rescued, taken to the SPCA Horse Care Unit for veterinary treatment, nutrition, and hoof care, and will remain under care as the case proceeds. This incident highlights the urgent need for public vigilance and stronger enforcement to safeguard the welfare of working equines on public roads.
