Spain’s oldest horse race, the Carreras de Caballos de Sanlúcar, will celebrate its 180th edition this summer on the beaches of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz. Established in 1845, the races take place on the sand at low tide along the town’s western shoreline, creating a unique spectacle against the backdrop of Doñana National Park and sunset views. The 2025 event spans two sessions from August 5-7 and 19-21, featuring professional and amateur jockeys competing over distances of 1,400 to 1,800 meters, with betting available both on-site and online.
The event draws thousands of spectators who enjoy the festive atmosphere, blending world-class horse racing with traditional Andalucían hospitality. Recognized as a Festival of International Tourist Interest, the races are a vital part of Sanlúcar’s cultural identity, alongside its gastronomy, flamenco, and manzanilla wine. Organizers aim to secure UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status, underscoring the race’s historic and social significance as it continues to grow in popularity among locals and international visitors alike.
